Reconnecting with Who You Are

Ever show up at work, home or the grocery store and think to yourself – how’d I get here?

You remember getting into the car and pulling out of your neighborhood, then next thing you know you’ve arrived with no memory of how you got to where you are.

This doesn’t just happen with driving home from work after a long day or winding up at Target on a Saturday afternoon – it happens in life too.

You find yourself in a career or a marriage or a body – with no idea how you got here. You look in the mirror, and the face staring back at you feels like a stranger.

You’re not alone in this. So many people are living on autopilot – waking up day after day just going through the motions. And finding themselves living a life that doesn’t feel quite right.

It’s easy to get caught up in the doing and to get lost along the way.

But deep down – you know that there’s more to life. You know that you’re meant for more.

That’s why you feel that undercurrent of frustration and resentment. That feeling of being stuck.

It’s because you’re not living to your full potential. Not embracing life. Not fully being YOU!

Maybe you’d always wanted to be an artist but your parents said no – that’s not a “real” career – so you became an accountant instead. Maybe you’d always wanted to be an attorney but you had kids you so you put your career on hold – indefinitely.

Maybe you followed the path you thought you “should” take or the one your parents expected you to take. Maybe you dreamed of something different, but life had other plans.

Maybe you just kept taking the steps only to one day wind up sitting at your desk as the CFO of a great company yet looking around you realizing that there’s nothing there that actually makes you happy.

Regardless of what got you here or whether the life you’re living right now looks good on the outside or not – you’re here, and it doesn’t feel right. You don’t feel like you – and you know, it’s time for a change.

You might worry that you’re doing something wrong – or that there’s something wrong with you. That you don’t deserve the life you want – or that you’re not capable of making it happen.

Not true.

The truth is – you need to recalibrate how you’re living, and in order to do that – you’ve got to reconnect with who you truly are.

Remember what inspires you – what lights you up – and what excites you. Remember what makes you smile – laugh out loud – and truly feel happy. Remember what it feels like to be you.

Who you truly are has always been with you, even if life’s gotten you a little off track. It’s time now to bring her back. To infuse your life with more of her.

First step – journal on this – the truest version of you – who is she?

Free write for 15-20 minutes every single day.

You can also talk with your friends who have know you forever and look at old photo albums and journals. Think back to who you were as a kid – before the world told you who to be…and who not to be (you know, the you before middle school).

Reconnect with her, and then ask yourself what is she ready to start doing differently?

Again free write in your journal for 15-20 minutes every day – you’ll get the clarity you need.

Pay special attention to where in your life you’re currently out of alignment with who you truly are.

This exercise will point you towards the changes it’s time to make. Some of mine – better boundaries, more laughter and fun.
